Attention Nursing Home Administrators in East Coast, Gulf Coast, and all hurricane-prone areas!

Leverage April and May to spread out expenses and ensure your facility is ready for potential impacts. Here are some key areas to begin working on:

  • Stock Up Strategically: Top off supplies now while managing your monthly budget:

  1. âś… Emergency Linens

  2. ✅ Batteries/Battery Packs & Flashlights 🔦🔋

  3. âś… Gloves, Wipes, Briefs

  4. âś… Portable Oxygen Tanks & Necessary Medical Supplies

  5. âś… Kitchen Disposables (plates, cups, cutlery for power outages)

  • Food & Water: Confirm your Emergency/Disaster Menu is ready and you have adequate non-perishable food/water supplies secured based on your state/local requirements.

  • Critical Documents: Ensure your team knows how to print MARS/TARS & Diet Orders OFFLINE if systems go down.

  • Agreements & Plans:

  1. Review Mutual Aid Agreements (evacuation/receiving). Ensure contact info and terms are current.

  2. Verify Transportation Agreements are in place and actionable.

  3. Receiving Facilities: Research extra dumpster procurement NOW for potential surge capacity if hosting evacuees.

  • Power Up: Confirm generator fuel agreements are SOLID. Ensure generator inspections are current & perform test runs according to manufacturer and regulatory guidelines.

  • CEMP Review: Dust off your Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP). Is it up-to-date based on current facility needs, staff, and state/local regulations?

  • State Emergency Reporting: Ensure YOU + 2 key staff (e.g., DON, Maintenance Dir.) have active access to YOUR STATE'S required health facility reporting system and know how to use it proficiently. Verify the specific system required in your jurisdiction. (HFRS for Florida)

  • Resident ID: Ensure updated resident photos and ID bracelets are ready for rapid deployment if needed.

  • Staff Training: Before June 1st, conduct in-service training detailing CEMP roles – who does what during an emergency? Clarity is vital!

Please remember, this is NOT an all-inclusive list, but highlights critical areas to begin focusing on over the next two months. Tailor your comprehensive preparations to your specific facility needs and all state/local guidance.

Proactive planning now prevents chaos later. Let's work together to ensure the safety of our residents and staff across all potentially affected regions!
